Premier League to Enhance Referee Transparency in 2026/27

The Premier League, in collaboration with the professional referees’ body Pro Ref, announced an initiative to improve transparency regarding referees' and VARs' decisions during matches for the 2026/27 season. This will involve publishing direct quotes from on-field referees and VARs on the Premier League Match Centre, including explanations for decisions made on the pitch and the rationale behind VAR interventions.

The communications will be available on the Premier League's digital platforms, including a dedicated page on their website and app. Additionally, Ref Cam will provide audio from selected incidents, enhancing the viewing experience by offering a referee's perspective.

The league will also publish weekly findings from its Key Match Incident (KMI) Panel, which reviews critical decisions such as penalties and red cards, assessing the performance of match officials. This initiative aims to clarify the decision-making process and improve fan engagement.
