Nigeria Customs Service Denies Smuggling Allegations

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has refuted allegations regarding increased smuggling, revenue leakage, and recruitment impropriety. Deputy Comptroller Abdullahi Maiwada issued a statement on Thursday in response to an investigative report published on August 7, 2026.

The report claimed intensified smuggling along various corridors, including Seme and Idiroko, and manipulation of the 846 valuation code at major commands. Maiwada asserted that the surge in smuggling allegations contradicts the NCS's enforcement activities, which include regular seizures.

He explained that the 846 valuation code is a digital tool for vehicles with non-standard identification numbers, and that revenue collections have reached historic levels. Regarding recruitment, the NCS confirmed that the process for Assistant Superintendents of Customs II was authorized by the Nigeria Customs Service Board and adhered to the NCS Act, 2023.

Promotions within the Service are based on seniority and merit, not personal preference. Maiwada emphasized that leadership training is part of their human capital development strategy.
