CWPPF Condemns Attack on Journalists at APC Rally

On September 5, 2026, five journalists were attacked by suspected thugs while returning from covering the inauguration of a coalition supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano State. The Coalition for Whistleblower Protection and Press Freedom (CWPPF) condemned the incident, which involved the destruction of a Radio Nigeria, Pyramid FM vehicle.

The assailants used machetes and knives to damage the vehicle despite the presence of security personnel, including the orderly to the Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory and operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS). The affected journalists included Shafiu Abdullahi Panshekara, Abdulmajid Habib Isa Tukuntawa, Yakubu Abubakar Gwagwarwa, Ibrahim Hussaini, and Abdulbaki Ali Ahmed Sharifai of Guarantee Radio.

The CWPPF described the attack as an affront to press freedom and called for an immediate investigation by the Kano State Police and DSS to identify and prosecute those responsible. The coalition emphasized the need for the safety of journalists as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
