Death Toll in Zamfara Farmers' Attack Rises to 23

On Thursday, the death toll from an attack by suspected bandits on farmers in Sauna District, Talata Mafara Local Government Area of Zamfara State, increased to 23, according to community sources. Initial reports had indicated 16 fatalities, but the number rose as more bodies were recovered from the fields.

The victims were ambushed while working on their farmlands on Thursday morning. An anonymous local resident reported that the assailants arrived on multiple motorcycles and opened fire indiscriminately on the farmers present.

The remains of all 23 victims were buried in a mass burial at the palace of the district head in Sauna, conducted earlier on Thursday. As of the time of reporting, there had been no official statement from security authorities regarding the incident, and attempts to contact DSP Yazid Abubakar, the spokesperson for the Zamfara State Police Command, were unsuccessful.
