DECAN Advocates for Enhanced Media Role in Naval Operations

The Defence Correspondents Association of Nigeria (DECAN) has urged the Nigerian Navy to broaden opportunities for journalists to participate in naval operations and exercises. This appeal was made on Tuesday during a courtesy visit by the newly elected DECAN leadership, represented by President Odita Sundai, to Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, the Director of Naval Information in Abuja.

Sundai emphasized that embedding journalists in military operations would improve the accuracy and depth of reporting on the Navy's successes in safeguarding Nigeria's maritime domain. He noted the limited access journalists currently have, which restricts comprehensive reporting.

The DECAN president specifically requested the Navy to expand its media embed initiatives, particularly for journalists based in Abuja, to foster greater appreciation of the sacrifices made by military personnel. Captain Folorunsho acknowledged the vital role of defense correspondents in shaping public perception and reaffirmed the Navy's commitment to maintaining a productive relationship with the media, encouraging regular interactions and clarifications on military issues.
