Delta State Government Approves New Hostel Facilities

The Delta State Government has approved the construction of hostel facilities for male and female students across nine state-owned tertiary institutions. This initiative, disclosed by Professor Nyerhovwo Tonukari, the state commissioner for higher education, aims to address the accommodation challenges faced by thousands of students.

The decision was announced following a meeting of the State Executive Council presided over by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori. Recent figures indicate that the student population in Delta State's tertiary institutions has risen significantly, with Delta State University in Abraka accommodating 35,000 students but only having facilities for 2,000.

The approval includes the construction of two hostel blocks for male and female students and the reconstruction of an abandoned Senate building at Delta State University, which has remained incomplete since its award in 2010. Mr.

Godknow Angel, the commissioner for housing, assured that the Ministry of Housing would ensure effective supervision and timely delivery of the approved projects.
