Nigerian Diaspora Athletes to Compete in 2026 Games

The Nigerian Sports Commission (NSC) has announced that diaspora athletes will compete in the inaugural Intermediate Games scheduled for Lagos in 2026. This event marks a significant development in Nigerian sports, with 50 athletes from the diaspora expected to participate.

Bukola Olopade, the Director General of the NSC, highlighted the rapid progress made by the diaspora and the commitment of Tund Adelakun, chair of the diaspora athletes committee, in attracting interest from Nigerians abroad. The Intermediate Games aim to bridge the gap between grassroots competitions and elite levels, providing a structured pathway for young athletes transitioning from youth competitions to senior events.

The NSC's initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance Nigeria's competitive edge in major international competitions and to monitor and develop talent among athletes aged 16 to 19. The Lagos State government has partnered with Yaba College of Technology to provide operational support for the athletes.

Preparations for the team are already underway, with a camp site in Europe being arranged.
