Nigeria's Contactless Passport Renewal Revolutionizes Process

The Nigerian government has introduced a contactless passport renewal system for Nigerians living abroad, significantly reducing the processing time from six months to just five days. This reform, initiated by Dr. Olubunmi Tunji Ojo, the Minister of Interior, aims to alleviate the frustrations faced by the diaspora community, who previously endured lengthy and cumbersome procedures.

The system was first launched in Canada and later extended to the United Kingdom, allowing eligible citizens to submit biometric details remotely via a dedicated mobile application, eliminating the need for physical appearances at Nigerian missions abroad. Timileyin Gbenga, a Nigerian community leader in Birmingham, noted the stark difference in processing times, with some family members receiving their passports in under two weeks.

Dr. Adekunle Shonola, a senior lecturer, emphasized the efficiency of the new system compared to the outdated analog processes. The initiative has been praised for restoring public confidence in government services and is part of a broader effort to modernize Nigeria's immigration and civil registration systems.
