Diri Removes Bayelsa Traditional Ruler Over Insecurity

On May 21, 2025, Bayelsa State Governor Senator Douye Diri announced the removal of High Chief Wilcox Seiyefa from the chieftaincy throne of the Swali Community, following recommendations from a fact-finding committee regarding his alleged involvement in insecurity. The announcement was made during a meeting with stakeholders at the Government House in Yenagoa.

Governor Diri emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and order in the state and directed the process for electing a new paramount ruler to commence immediately, with completion expected within three months. The deputy governor, Dr.

Peter Akp, clarified that a caretaker committee would continue to function until new leadership is established. The governor also approved the withdrawal of staff from High Chief Wilcox Seiyefa's office.

An electoral committee has been formed to oversee the election process, which is set to begin on June 30, 2026.
