Bayelsa Governor Diri Removes Swali Traditional Ruler

Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri has officially removed High Chief Wilcox Seiyefa from his position as the paramount ruler of Swali Community due to ongoing security concerns in the area. The announcement was made on Tuesday during a meeting at the Government House in Yenagoa, with Deputy Governor Peter Akp acting on behalf of Governor Diri.

This action follows the recommendations of a fact-finding committee that investigated the security situation in Swali. The committee found that the leadership was weak and not effectively managing the situation, leading to unrest.

Consequently, the state government has withdrawn recognition of Seiyefa as the traditional ruler in accordance with the Bayelsa State Chieftaincy Law. The government will facilitate the election of a new paramount ruler within three months, starting from June 30, 2026.

A five-member electoral committee has been inaugurated to oversee this process, with High Chief Bertola Perekem as the chair. The current caretaker committee will remain in office until new leadership is established.
