FCT Police Chief Advises Against Phone Searches

Ahmad Sanusi, the Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory, held a press conference on Tuesday, where he advised residents, particularly youths, to resist allowing police officers to search their mobile phones during stop-and-search operations. He stated that such actions violate a clear directive from the Inspector General of Police, which prohibits random searches of mobile phones by police officers.

Sanusi explained that while mobile phones can serve as evidence in criminal investigations, officers are not permitted to demand access to phones based solely on suspicion of internet fraud or other offenses. He emphasized that individuals should not open their phones for police searches and should seek help by contacting nearby police emergency lines if confronted.

Sanusi reaffirmed the commitment of the Federal Capital Territory Police Command to enforce the Inspector General's directive and warned that officers who violate this directive would face disciplinary action.
