FCT Police Chief Warns Against Illegal Phone Searches

Ahmad Sanusi, the Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), issued a warning to residents of Abuja on Monday, advising them against allowing police officers to search their mobile phones during routine stops and arrests. He stated that no police officer has the authority to stop a person on the road and search their phone without following due process.

This directive comes in response to complaints regarding police misconduct and extortion, where officers unlawfully demand access to citizens' phones. Sanusi emphasized that while mobile phones can serve as important evidence in criminal investigations, officers must adhere to legal procedures when accessing such devices.

He urged the public to report any misconduct by police officers and reassured that the FCT Police Command is committed to professional conduct. Sanusi reiterated that actions infringing on citizens' rights will not be tolerated and encouraged vigilance among residents when witnessing police misconduct during patrols.
