SWAN and Cricket Association Launch School Tournament in Ebonyi

The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) and the Ebonyi State Cricket Association commenced the second secondary school zonal cricket championship aimed at strengthening grassroots talent development in Ebonyi State. The tournament began on Friday at Ngele Oruta Township Stadium and is designed to enhance early talent identification and create a structured pathway for young athletes.

Ndubuisi Nwogha, the chairman of SWAN, described the initiative as a major step in developing cricket in the state, noting the sport's gradual gain in prominence. Emeka Opara, chairman of the local organizing committee, emphasized that the championship would bridge the gap between secondary school competitions and higher levels, discovering and grooming young players capable of representing the state and country in the future.

The tournament features zonal qualifiers across Ebonyi's north, south, and central senatorial districts, with winners progressing to the state finals. The event is expected to attract top government officials, including Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru.
