Abuja's Idu Zone to Get 24-Hour Power Supply by 2027

The Idu industrial area in Abuja is set to receive a 24-hour power supply through a 50-megawatt electrification project, following a ground-breaking ceremony. This initiative is a collaboration between Welbeck Electricity Distribution Limited, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), and Shell Gas Limited.

The project will be executed in phases, with the first phase delivering 10MW by December 2026, and the remaining 40MW to be completed throughout 2027. Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, announced that the Federal Government is conducting technical audits across major industrial corridors, prioritizing the Lagos industrial axis, Abuja-Kaduna corridor, and Enugu-Onitsha axis.

Tegbe highlighted the importance of the Lagos corridor, which accounts for about 40% of national electricity demand, and aims to create approximately 180,000 jobs in six months. He also discussed the Electricity Act 2023's benefits and emphasized the need for community protection of power infrastructure to ensure sustainability.

Minister of State for Industry, John Owan Enoh, reiterated the government's strategy to promote local production and economic diversification.
