FCT Indigenous Group Critiques Amnesty International's Actions

Indigenous residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have accused Amnesty International of selective human rights interventions concerning a political dispute involving Kuje Area Council Chairman, Hon. Samuel Danjuma Shekwolo. Commandant Isaac David, Executive Director of the Original Inhabitants Youths Empowerment Organisation (AOIYEO), expressed disappointment during a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday, stating that Amnesty's focus on Shekwolo's alleged threatening remarks overshadowed longstanding grievances of indigenous communities, including issues of land rights, forced displacement, and political exclusion.

David highlighted the lack of Amnesty's response to systemic violations affecting the 858 settlements in the FCT and questioned the organization's urgency in addressing inflammatory statements made by prominent figures in the past. He argued that Amnesty's credibility hinges on impartial advocacy and warned that its involvement in local political matters could dilute its mandate.

AOIYEO called for Amnesty International to prioritize more pressing issues affecting indigenous FCT communities.
