Omidiran Advocates for Sports Talent Development in FCT

Hon. Hulayat Motunrayo Omidiran, the Executive Chairman of the Federal Character Commission (FCC), called on the FCT Football Association (FCT FA) and the FCT Sports Department to establish the Federal Capital Territory as a hub for sports talent discovery and development. This appeal was made during a courtesy visit by Alhaji Abba Mouktar Mohammed, Chairman of the FCT FA, and Mr. Iyiola Ogundele, Acting Director of Sports at the FCT Sports Department, to the FCC headquarters in Abuja.

Omidiran emphasized the importance of grassroots sports development and the need to identify and nurture talents across various sports, not just football. She pointed out that the FCT has the potential to be a significant source of sporting talents for Nigeria if proper structures are implemented.

Omidiran also highlighted the shortage of qualified coaches in schools as a challenge and advocated for training teachers to support sports activities while pursuing the hiring of professional coaches. She stressed that schools are vital for discovering young talents and that a structured school sports system could help develop athletes for national and international competitions.
