Nigeria Approves Alphanumeric Digital Postcode System

On Tuesday, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) approved the implementation of an alphanumeric digital postcode system for Nigeria, as disclosed by the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani. This initiative is part of efforts led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to modernize Nigeria's national address framework.

The new system will be developed in collaboration with the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) and its team, including Postmaster General Tola Odeyemi. The approval is seen as a significant step towards creating an enabling environment for Nigeria's digital economy, which has been rapidly growing.

The existing postal code system, which utilizes a six-digit code primarily for sorting and routing mail, has been in place for decades. The transformation aims to enhance financial services nationwide, improve geospatial data accuracy, and address long-standing customer frustrations related to hidden fees and inefficient processes in cross-border e-commerce.
