FEC Approves Upgrade of Gombe Snakebite Treatment Centre

On Monday, during a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, chaired by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the council approved the upgrade of the snakebite treatment centre located in Kaltungo, Gombe State. Prof.

Ali Pate, the Minister of Health and Social Welfare, disclosed that the new centre will offer specialized treatment, conduct research, and train health workers. This initiative aims to ensure a steady supply of quality anti-snake venom, as snakebites pose a significant public health challenge, particularly in rural communities across Nigeria's northeast, northwest, and north-central regions.

Nigeria records approximately 43,000 snakebite cases annually, with victims facing death, permanent disability, and psychological trauma. The centre will also collaborate with international institutions to enhance specialist care for victims.

Additionally, FEC approved the procurement of 10 compressed natural gas (CNG) power vehicles for the National Blood Service Agency, costing ₦6.9 billion, to improve blood supply for various medical needs, addressing the country's annual requirement of 1.8 million blood units.
