Federal Court Adjourns Challenge to Donald Duke's PRP Presidential Bid

A lawsuit questioning former Cross River governor Donald Duke's eligibility as the People's Redemption Party's 2027 presidential candidate has been postponed…
Proceedings to challenge Donald Duke's selection as the People's Redemption Party's presidential nominee for the 2027 general election have been postponed by the Federal High Court in Abuja. Justice Mohammed Umar adjourned the case to June 29, 2026, following the opening hearing on Monday.
The legal action was brought by Yakubu Muham Kingslei, an aspirant competing within the PRP, who retained counsel to represent him. Registered under case file FHC ABJ CS 1234/2026, the suit lists Duke, the PRP itself, the Independent National Electoral Commission, and additional parties as respondents.
Kingslei's attorneys maintain that Duke failed to satisfy party membership criteria when the primary elections took place during May. In submissions before the court, Kingslei's legal representatives contend Duke held no valid PRP membership status on May 4, the date the party delivered its membership register to the electoral body.
Voting in the primary occurred on May 25, with outcomes made public on May 26. The plaintiff's counsel has petitioned the court to render a decision on whether Duke's candidacy warrants cancellation under these circumstances.
At Monday's proceeding, the plaintiff's counsel, Abdullahi Muhammad, requested a postponement permitting him to lodge a motion for alternative means of delivering court documents to Duke. Service of court papers to the former governor directly had encountered obstacles, making the request for substitute service necessary.
The court granted this request, with Justice Umar fixing the subsequent hearing for June 29.
