Nigeria Congratulates Bangladesh's New President Alamgir

The Federal Government of Nigeria congratulated Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on his election as the 23rd President of Bangladesh, which took place on Thursday, August 20, 2026. Alamgir was elected by the Jatiya Sangsad, securing 255 votes against 88 for his opponent, retired Colonel Oli Ahmad.

This election marked Bangladesh's first contested presidential election in 35 years. Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, Nigeria's Minister of Foreign Affairs, conveyed the congratulations on X, commending the peaceful electoral process.

Nigeria expressed confidence that Alamgir would provide responsible leadership focused on national unity, stability, and sustainable development.
