Nigerian Government Denies Approval of History Textbook Excluding Igbo Content

The Federal Ministry of Education in Nigeria has refuted claims of approving a contentious history textbook that reportedly omitted Igbo content. The Ministry, through its Director of Press and Public Relations, Boriowo Folashade, emphasized that the book was not sanctioned for use in Nigerian schools.

The Ministry highlighted that the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) is responsible for reviewing and approving instructional materials in line with the national curriculum. It was disclosed that the NERDC, as the statutory body, did not include the controversial textbook in its approved list for use in schools nationwide.

Parents, teachers, and school administrators were urged to disregard any misinformation surrounding the book and warned against using unauthorized instructional materials that could undermine curriculum standards. The Ministry called on the public to support responsible discourse, reject divisive misinformation, and verify the approval status of educational materials through official channels before adopting them for classroom use.
