Nigeria Moves to Decriminalise Attempted Suicide

The Federal Government of Nigeria has initiated steps to decriminalise attempted suicide, following the Federal Executive Council's approval of the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare's position. Iziaq Salako, the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, announced this during the 2026 World Suicide Prevention Day commemoration in Abuja, represented by the ministry's Permanent Secretary, Daju Kachollom S.

The proposed reform will proceed to the National Assembly for legislative consideration. Salako stated that decriminalising attempted suicide is not just a legal reform but a public health and human rights imperative, advocating for care and support for individuals in mental health crises instead of punishment.

He noted that removing the fear of criminal sanctions could reduce stigma and encourage people to seek help. Salako also stressed that changing the law alone is insufficient to prevent suicide, calling for sustained investment in mental health services and community support.
