Sultan of Sokoto and FG Partner to Tackle Out-of-School Children
The federal government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with traditional rulers to address the issue of out-of-school children in Nigeria. The agreement was finalized on Wednesday in Argungu, Kebbi State, by the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, and Dr Abdulrazaq Akinyele, the Deputy Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC).
This partnership, involving UBEC and the Sultan Foundation for Peace and Development, has led to the creation of the Advancing Basic Education Partnership Programme (AGE). This strategic initiative aims to enhance basic education in Nigeria by leveraging the influence of traditional and religious leaders.
The programme will be piloted in four states: Adamawa, Katsina, Sokoto, and Osun. The Sultan emphasized the commitment of traditional rulers to combat child street begging and facilitate the return of children to school, noting that begging is not sanctioned by Islam.
He also praised the Kebbi State Government and Governor Nasir Idris for their efforts in managing the Argungu Orphanage.
