Nigeria Advocates US Support Role in Insecurity Fight

During a discussion at Chatham House in London, Yusuf Tuggar, Nigeria's Minister of Foreign Affairs, articulated the Nigerian government's stance on addressing insecurity in the country. He asserted that the United States should play a supportive role rather than engage in direct military intervention.

Tuggar highlighted that security challenges in Nigeria and the wider Sahel region are best tackled through locally driven solutions backed by international support. He noted that previous foreign military engagements in West Africa have complicated the already fragile security dynamics.

Tuggar referenced the successful peacekeeping efforts in Sierra Leone and Liberia, which were largely driven by regional actors with international backing. He stressed the importance of a coordinated approach among neighboring countries, particularly in the context of the Lake Chad Basin, where threats from groups like Boko Haram transcend national borders.

The discussion also touched on past diplomatic strains between Nigeria and the US, particularly during Donald Trump's presidency, and the need for enhanced cooperation in security matters.
