FG Launches National Agricultural Mechanisation Policy

The Federal Government has introduced the National Agricultural Mechanisation Policy and the National Agricultural Mechanisation Investment Strategy, aiming to establish a mega tractor assembly plant with an annual production capacity of 2,000 to 4,000 units. Senator Abubakar Kyari, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, announced this initiative on Wednesday during the High-Level National Policy Dialogue on Agricultural Mechanisation in Abuja.

The policies are intended to transform Nigeria from an agricultural potential to an agricultural powerhouse, addressing mechanization deficits and food vulnerabilities. Kyari emphasized that mechanisation encompasses various agricultural processes beyond just tractors, including land preparation, irrigation, and digital technologies.

Under the Renewed Hope National Agricultural Mechanisation Programme, the government has begun procuring 2,000 tractors and over 9,000 assorted implements, marking the largest agricultural mechanisation initiative in Africa. The proposed tractor assembly plant aims to reduce reliance on imports, localize production, create jobs, and foster a sustainable mechanisation economy.
