Nigerian Government Launches Housing Initiative for NMDPRA Staff

The Federal Government has initiated a housing drive aimed at expanding access to affordable housing, with 430 staff members of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) becoming beneficiaries of the Renewed Hope Housing Programme. Engr. Dr. Muttaqha Rabe Darma, the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, announced this initiative on Wednesday in Abuja during the presentation of houses to the beneficiaries.

He stated that the government aims to reduce the percentage of workers' income spent on housing, which currently ranges from 40 to 60 percent, thereby alleviating financial pressure on families and reducing incentives for corruption. The government is also addressing a housing deficit of approximately 16 million units and is taking stock of about 250,000 abandoned housing projects across the country.

Darma mentioned that the government is exploring various financing mechanisms, including access to the National Housing Fund, to facilitate home ownership, particularly for workers in the informal sector.
