FIFA Considers Red Card for Mouth-Covering Players

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has suggested implementing a red card sanction for players who cover their mouths while speaking to opponents, following a racism allegation involving Benfica's Gianluca Prestianni and Real Madrid's Vinicius Junior during a Champions League match last month. Infantino stated that covering one's mouth implies the communication of something racist, and therefore, should warrant a send-off.

This proposal will be discussed at the International Football Association Board (IFAB) meeting on Saturday. Infantino emphasized the need for measures to strengthen the fight against racism in football, with the next FIFA Congress scheduled in Vancouver next month to consider this rule.

The sanctions may vary depending on whether the player publicly apologizes for their racist behavior. Prestianni, who was accused of racial abuse, faces a potential 10-match ban if found guilty by UEFA, which is currently investigating the incident.
