FIFA Bans Ian Alves for Five Years Over Harassment

FIFA's independent ethics committee has banned Ian Alves, the former General Secretary of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF), from all football-related activities for five years due to sexual harassment of a female staff member. Alves has been fined 20,000 Swiss francs (approximately 22,000 USD) for breaching provisions of the FIFA Code of Ethics, which aims to protect the physical and mental integrity of individuals in positions of duty.

The decision followed a review of a written statement from the victim and documentation provided by the GFF, along with evidence gathered during the investigation. Alves is expected to step down from his position in 2024, as the ban will take effect on Monday when the decision is formally communicated.

The full grounds for the ruling will be disclosed within 60 days, in accordance with FIFA's code of ethics. Meanwhile, FIFA has invited the Iranian Football Federation (FFIRI) to its headquarters to discuss the country's participation in this year's World Cup.
