Anambra West Calls for Competent Leaders Amid Flood Crisis

On September 15, 2026, Onyekachukwu Okonkwo, an indigene of Anambra West Local Government Area in Anambra State, called for competent representation to tackle the flood crisis affecting the region. He urged residents to prioritize competence over financial inducement in the 2027 elections.

Okonkwo noted that flooding has escalated from a seasonal issue to a governance and development crisis, affecting communities such as Oroma-Etiti Anam, Umudora Anam, Umueze Anam, Mmiata Anam, Nzam, Inoma, and Olumbanasa. He reported that flooding between July and October last year resulted in destroyed farmlands, submerged homes, disrupted businesses, and displaced residents.

Okonkwo highlighted the adverse effects on education and healthcare, stressing the need for flood-resilient infrastructure and the completion of the Dasin Hausa Dam in Adamawa State to mitigate flooding impacts. He advocated for the establishment of permanent emergency holding centers instead of using public schools as camps for displaced persons.
