Nigeria Launches UK-Funded Livestock Standards Programme

On 20th August 2026, the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development began collaboration with the British Standards Institution (BSI) to implement the UK-funded Grow Job and Trade Standards Programme. This initiative aims to strengthen Nigeria's quality and standards systems and expand market access for livestock and livestock products.
The engagement follows the successful completion of a three-year Standards Partnership Programme, also funded by the UK. Dr. Chinyere Ijeoma Akujobi, Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, emphasized the need for the programme to tackle critical issues in the livestock sector, including sanitary and phytosanitary requirements, export certification, and disease control.
She highlighted the importance of establishing effective residue monitoring plans and strengthening domestic testing capacity to ensure Nigerian products meet international safety and quality standards. Dr. Akujobi also called for improved coordination among government institutions involved in quality control and trade to facilitate livestock exports.
