NALDA Reclaims Forest Reserves to Boost Agriculture and Security

The National Agricultural Land Development Authority (NALDA) has unveiled a strategy to reclaim abandoned forest reserves across Nigeria, aiming to convert them into productive agricultural and environmental assets. Executive Secretary Cornelius Oluwasegun Adebayo announced this plan during an inspection of the Green Hope Horticulture Project in Odogbolu Local Government Area, Ogun State.

Adebayo noted that many forest reserves have become hideouts for criminals due to years of neglect. NALDA is collaborating with state governments, private investors, and international partners to restore these lands, which will host agroforestry projects and tree crop plantations.

A flagship project in Kwara State involves developing approximately 18,000 hectares into a large-scale cashew plantation in partnership with CAPAN. This initiative aims to provide raw materials for local industries, create jobs, and reduce criminal activities in the area.

Adebayo emphasized that reclaiming these reserves will not only enhance agricultural production but also diminish spaces available for criminal operations.
