Former PDP Chairman Bamanga Tukur Dies at 90

Alhaji Dr Bamanga Tukur, a prominent figure in Nigeria's political landscape and former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), died on Saturday at the age of 90, just two days before his 91st birthday. His death occurred at his residence in Wuse 2, Abuja, and was announced by Chief Oliver Okpala, his former media aide, with the approval of Tukur’s eldest son, Rt.

Hon. Awwal Tukur, and daughter, Lami. Tukur was known for his influential roles in politics and business, having served as the Managing Director and later chairman of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), where he oversaw the development of several ports.

He was also the governor of the old Gongola State and served as a Federal Minister. His tenure as PDP National Chairman was marked by efforts to bring "sanity, progress, electoral victories and political decorum" to the party.

Tukur was also recognized internationally, being the first African to address the United Nations General Assembly as a private citizen. His remains will be flown to Adamawa for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.
