Policemen Arrested for Extorting ICPC Chairman in Abuja

Four policemen were arrested by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command for allegedly setting up an illegal checkpoint in Abuja and extorting N53,000 from Dr. Musa Aliyu, the chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

The incident occurred when the officers, who had reportedly abandoned their assigned duty posts, stopped Dr. Aliyu without recognizing him and compelled him to withdraw the money via a Point of Sale (POS) terminal.

Following the incident, the FCT Police Command initiated a preliminary investigation, which indicated the officers' actions were criminal and inconsistent with the expected standards of the Nigeria Police Force. The officers are undergoing disciplinary procedures, and the police command has assured that appropriate sanctions will be applied if they are found culpable.

The Inspector General of Police has reiterated that officers are prohibited from conducting indiscriminate searches and has encouraged the public to report any incidents of extortion or misconduct.
