Nigeria's Water Crisis: 70 Million Lack Safe Drinking Water

Nigeria is facing a severe water crisis, with reports indicating that around 70 million people lack access to basic drinking water and 114 million lack basic sanitation. This crisis is driven by failing infrastructure, with public water systems in major states falling short despite significant budget allocations, including a 700 million naira loan from the World Bank.

In Kano State, daily water demand is estimated at 700 million liters, yet supply is far below this level due to inactive treatment plants. Residents have resorted to purchasing water from vendors, spending an average of 1,200 naira daily.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf is reviewing the 2025 budget to prioritize water provision, while Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Maiduguri has initiated responses to address acute water shortages. The situation has led to thousands of deaths from waterborne diseases, with the NCDC reporting 4,778 lives lost to cholera between 2020 and 2024.
