NMA Condemns EFCC Harassment of UUTH Staff in Gombe

The Gombe State branch of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) condemned the harassment and intimidation of staff at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH) by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The incident occurred when EFCC operatives stormed the hospital to arrest Professor Eyo Ekp, a renowned cardiothoracic surgeon, leading to panic among patients and visitors as tear gas was deployed.

The NMA described the actions of the EFCC as an unfortunate and unacceptable violation of the dignity and safety of healthcare personnel. Dr.

Ahmad Adamu Girbo, chairman of the NMA Gombe State branch, expressed concerns that such operations could negatively affect healthcare delivery and the morale of medical personnel. The NMA called for a thorough investigation into the incident, urging authorities to identify the officers involved and ensure appropriate disciplinary measures are taken.

They also demanded a formal apology and compensation for Professor Ekp and affected staff members.
