Kano Governor Signs Orders to Combat Drug Abuse

On [date not specified], Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf signed Executive Orders aimed at declaring a Public Safety Emergency to combat substance abuse and trafficking in the state. The orders prohibit the sale of illicit drugs and unregistered pharmaceutical products without valid prescriptions.

They impose movement restrictions in identified drug abuse hotspots, banning movement between 6:00 p.m. and 10:00 a.m. daily, effective immediately. Security agencies at both federal and state levels are empowered to stop, search, arrest, and prosecute suspected drug traffickers and users.

The governor also announced the revocation of Certificates of Occupancy for properties involved in illicit drug activities. Following the signing, Yusuf inaugurated a Multi-Agency Anti-Substance Abuse Task Force to enforce these measures, backed by provisions of the Kano State Penal Code Law.

The task force is tasked with dismantling drug dens and prosecuting those involved in drug trafficking. Barrister Muhuyi Magaji Rimingado, the task force chairman, pledged to work with various stakeholders to promote peace and tackle drug abuse.
