IK-PRO Defends Mrs. Akpabio Against Media Attacks

The Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District Professionals (IK-PRO) issued a statement condemning what they termed a deliberate campaign against Mrs. Ekaette Unoma Akpabio, the wife of Senate President Godswill Akpabio. The group expressed concern over the national controversy surrounding her visit to the Senate chambers, particularly the media's labeling of individuals seen with her as "spiritualists." IK-PRO highlighted Mrs. Akpabio's reputation as a devout Catholic and her charitable work, which earned her the informal title "Mother Teresa of Akwa Ibom." They emphasized that she holds no public office and should not be subjected to political accountability due to her marriage.

The organization urged journalists and political entities to differentiate between the scrutiny of elected officials and attacks on their family members. They also reminded that Nigerian law offers remedies against cyberbullying, defamation, and digital abuse, stressing that harassment of the Senate President's family would not be tolerated.
