ASUU and Government Clash Over UNIOSUN VC Tenure Extension

The Southern Youth Forum (SYF) has called for dialogue among stakeholders at Osun State University (UNIOSUN) concerning the two-year tenure extension granted to Vice-Chancellor Prof Clement Adebooye by Governor Ademola Adeleke. SYF National President Olajide Olakunle emphasized the need for harmony to avoid negative impacts on students.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) declared that the extension, decided on September 5 during an emergency National Executive Council meeting in Abuja, contravenes university law. ASUU has instructed its UNIOSUN branch to mobilize against this alleged violation and formed a visitation team to engage with the university administration and governing council within two weeks.

In response, the Osun State government, represented by Commissioner Kolapo Alimi, affirmed its respect for staff unions but clarified that the governance of UNIOSUN is legally regulated. The government stated that the current tenure of the vice-chancellor is valid until January 2027 and that the extension decision aligns with statutory responsibilities and legislative amendments.
