Gunshots Fired in Edo as Police Clash with Traffic Officials

On Tuesday at approximately 3:00 p.m., a confrontation occurred between officers of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) and personnel from the Edo State Traffic Management Agency (EDSTMA) at Third Junction, Benin City, Edo State. The altercation escalated into physical violence, resulting in gunshots being fired and leaving at least one traffic official injured.

Witness Ezekiel Obi reported that the incident caused widespread panic among motorists, pedestrians, and traders, who fled the area to avoid potential stray bullets. The exact cause of the confrontation remains unclear, but it reportedly stemmed from an argument between the two agencies.

The incident disrupted normal activities around the junction for some time, with many avoiding the vicinity due to safety concerns. Resident Obaze expressed alarm over the aggressive tactics of specialized police units, urging authorities to ensure that law enforcement actions do not endanger the public.
