Sultan and Vatican Warn Against Hate Speech in Nigeria

The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa'ad Abubakar, representing the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), met with Vatican Secretary of State Paul Richard Gallagher to discuss the growing threats of hate speech and fake news in Nigeria. Both leaders expressed concern that these issues undermine peace and coexistence among different religious communities.

During the meeting held in Abuja, they agreed on the necessity for religious leaders to collaborate in promoting peace and countering divisive narratives. Salisu Shehu, the NSCIA Deputy Secretary General, participated in the discussions, condemning the trend of insulting religious leaders and citizens.

He noted that fake news has become a source of instability, contributing to significant troubles in various countries. The meeting also highlighted a shared commitment between Muslim and Catholic leaders to work together for the common good of Nigeria, particularly in addressing moral decline and fostering interfaith relations.
