Sultan of Sokoto Advocates for Peace in Media Training

Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, urged for sustained peace efforts at the opening of a two-day conflict-sensitivity training workshop for media practitioners in Sokoto. The workshop was organized by Action Against Hunger, International Alert, and Save the Children Initiative in partnership with the Nigerian Union of Journalists, Sokoto State Council, and funded by the European Union.

Represented by the Waziri of Sokoto, Professor Sambo Wali Junaidu, the Sultan stated that peace is essential for human existence, development, and religious freedom. He called on journalists and influential voices to prioritize peace-building and avoid narratives that could exacerbate divisions.

The Chairman of the NUJ, Comrade Usman Binji, praised the supporting organizations for their role in the capacity-building program. The workshop aims to establish a Community of Practice for journalists and stakeholders to collaborate and promote conflict-sensitive journalism.
