Egbetokun Urges Tinubu to Extend Tenure Until 2027

Egbetokun, the former Inspector General of Police, reportedly pleaded with President Bola Tinubu to permit him to stay in office until October 2027, completing a full four-year tenure. His resignation letter was submitted on Tuesday, citing family issues.

However, sources indicate that his resignation was influenced by a presidential directive to withdraw 11,000 police officers from VIP protection duties, a move that Egbetokun opposed, arguing that business leaders required police protection due to security concerns. This directive, which aimed to redeploy officers to combat kidnapping and banditry, was rejected by the president, who pointed out that the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps could adequately replace the withdrawn officers.

The decision to remove Egbetokun was reportedly driven by grievances that had accumulated over several months, particularly regarding his handling of security matters, including the directive issued on November 23, 2025.
