Mutfwang Launches Potato Production Boost in Plateau State

Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang of Plateau State has launched a significant agricultural initiative by officiating the distribution of 500 truckloads of subsidized fertilizer for the 2026 farming season in Jos South Local Government Area. This program is part of a broader strategy to enhance the potato production sector, which is vital for the state’s economy.

Mutfwang emphasized that agriculture remains the backbone of Plateau State's economy and announced the distribution of improved potato seedlings alongside essential farming inputs. The seedlings are high-quality, disease-resistant varieties designed to deliver higher yields.

The fertilizer is heavily subsidized at 20,000 naira per bag, significantly lower than market prices. The initiative aims to protect farmers from middlemen exploitation by ensuring direct market access and fair returns on their investments.

Additionally, the government plans to purchase harvested produce directly from farmers to stabilize prices and encourage year-round potato production, thereby creating continuous employment opportunities and enhancing food security in the region.
