IATA Calls for Enhanced Air Cargo Safety Measures

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has urged for stronger collaboration among stakeholders in the air cargo supply chain to mitigate risks associated with undeclared and misdeclared dangerous goods. IATA reported that approximately 80% of dangerous goods incidents in the first half of 2025 involved undeclared or hidden hazardous materials, such as lithium batteries, e-cigarettes, and aerosols.

This situation has raised concerns regarding the effectiveness of current aviation security screening processes. Brendan Sullivan, IATA’s Global Head of Cargo, stated that while security screening is crucial, it is not designed to detect all dangerous goods and should not be the primary solution.

IATA's white paper, "Safety and Security in the Cargo Supply Chain," outlines measures to strengthen controls and prevent dangerous goods from entering the air cargo system. The association called for enhanced oversight from governments, better identification and certification from manufacturers and online marketplaces, improved training for shippers and freight forwarders, and stronger checks by airlines and ground handlers.
