Police Clarifies Stance on Recording Officers by Citizens

The Nigeria Police Force, through its New Media Officer Aliyu Giwa, clarified that Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu is not opposed to citizens recording police officers. Giwa stated that the IGP's concern lies in the misuse of these recordings, particularly when officers are provoked or ridiculed.

He emphasized the distinction between responsible documentation and exploitation for social media content. Giwa affirmed that legitimate recordings can benefit both citizens and police officers, aiding in accountability and protecting against false allegations.

He also noted that police officers retain rights to dignity and privacy, despite their uniform. The clarification followed criticism from an X user who suggested equipping officers with body cameras if the police opposed citizen recordings.

Giwa confirmed that body cameras are part of discussions on accountable policing. He urged for respectful dialogue between the police and citizens, emphasizing a shared goal of a more professional police force and a safer Nigeria.
