IGP Disu Clarifies Stance on Recording Police Officers

The Nigeria Police Force, through its New Media Officer Aliyu Giwa, clarified that Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu does not oppose citizens recording police officers while they perform their duties in public. Giwa stated that the IGP's concern lies with the misuse of such recordings, particularly when encounters are turned into social media content.

He emphasized the need to differentiate between responsible documentation and the exploitation of police encounters for entertainment. Giwa noted that legitimate recordings could protect both the public and police officers, asserting that police officers retain their dignity and privacy rights despite being public servants.

He also mentioned that body cameras are part of discussions on modern policing. Giwa urged Nigerians to engage in discussions about police accountability and citizens' rights without resorting to insults, aiming for a more professional police service and a safer Nigeria.
