INEC Decentralizes Voter Registration to Wards in Rivers State

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Rivers State has approved the decentralization of the ongoing voter registration exercise to ward levels across the state. The decision was announced in a press release on January 30, 2026.

Geraldin Ekelemu, the head of voter education and publicity on behalf of the Resident Electoral Commissioner, stated that the voter registration at the ward level will commence on February 2, 2026, and will last for 50 days, covering all 319 wards in the state. This move aims to expand voter access, reduce barriers to registration, and encourage greater participation in the democratic process, especially at the grassroots level.

INEC emphasized that the decentralization will make it easier for eligible citizens to register without traveling long distances. The commission urged residents of Rivers State who are 18 years and above to take advantage of the exercise.

INEC reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring a transparent and inclusive voter registration process across the state.
