Kano Assembly Passes New Urban Planning Law for 2026

On Tuesday, the Kano State House of Assembly passed the Kano State Physical Planning Development Control Bill 2026, which aims to enhance urban planning and development in the state. The bill establishes two new metropolitan development agencies that will oversee physical planning and urban development across Kano State.

This new legislation repeals the Kano Urban Planning Development Authority (KNUPDA) and transfers its responsibilities to the newly formed agencies. Lawan Hussaini, a member representing Dala constituency, explained that the agencies will regulate physical development, grant building approvals, and ensure compliance with environmental plans.

The agencies will also inspect construction projects to ensure adherence to approved building plans and standards. The creation of these agencies is intended to promote orderly development and improve the state's physical planning system, transforming Kano into a modern city that meets international planning standards.
