Kano Government Seals Over 300 Illegal Structures

The Kano State Government has sealed more than 300 illegal structures in a recent enforcement action aimed at addressing violations of urban planning laws. Dr Dalhatu Aliyu Sani, the chairman of the Kano State Taskforce on Illegal Structures, announced the operation on Wednesday.

The crackdown focused on buildings constructed without the necessary approvals or in violation of the state’s master plan, affecting major roads such as Maiduguri Road, Western Bypass, Eastern Bypass, Ahmadu Bello Way, and Gwarzo Road. Notable properties sealed included Dan’agundi Shopping Plaza, various block-making sites, a car park, and a site belonging to a Chinese construction company.

The taskforce also targeted structures built on road setbacks, public land, waterways, and power line corridors. Dr Sani instructed owners of the sealed properties to report to the Kano Geographic Information System (KANGIS) headquarters to regularize their documents, warning that non-compliance would lead to prosecution.

The government has adopted a zero-tolerance policy against unapproved developments and will continue to enforce planning laws across Kano.
