Kano Assembly Calls for Action on Diphtheria Outbreak

The Kano State House of Assembly has called for urgent government intervention in a diphtheria outbreak in Rano Local Government Area, which has reportedly claimed the lives of more than 50 children. This motion was raised by Ibrahim Muhammad, the member representing Rano Constituency, during a plenary session presided over by Speaker Jibril Ismail Falgore.

The outbreak has been particularly severe in the Ridin and Sabuwar Qaura communities. Although emergency measures, including medication provision and health worker deployment, have begun, Muhammad emphasized the need for additional support.

Usman Abubakar Tasiu, representing Kiru Constituency, noted that the outbreak has spread to Kiru communities, with a local APC youth leader losing two children in one day. Saleh Ahmad from Dawakin Tofa Constituency urged the government to enhance vaccination efforts, warning of the disease's contagious nature.

Majority Leader Lawan Husseini called for the invocation of the state’s Health Protection Law to manage the outbreak effectively. The House adopted the motion and directed the Committee on Health to collaborate with the Ministry of Health for emergency relief.
